The 3.4 seconds is the time it takes to create my homepage from scratch. If you visit my website you will notice that the page is served much faster (~ 100ms). This is because the result of the first page creation is cached by wp-cache, and further page responses are served from the cache.

Keep in mind that WordPress is *very* slow. As an experienced programmer I knew that my hardware was capable to handle more request for my homepage. To test this I wrote the program I used for the benchmarks in this article. Result: WordPress 1/3 page per second, my program 17 pages per second.

I would like to know how a raspberry pi “mini supercomputer” (-link deleted by admin-, not with 64 nodes but for example 4) would performance with an application server – for example tomcat and a known tested application with JMeter. Are you thinking about testing something like this? The 3.4 seconds per page is not something really encouraging to test a “home server with raspberry pi” but who knows…

Comment on Introducing the MK802 FreedomStick. by robvanderhoeven http://freedomboxblog.nl/introducing-the-mk802-freedomstick/#comment-6673 robvanderhoeven Thu, 22 Nov 2012 18:05:29 +0000 http://freedomboxblog.nl/?p=344#comment-6673 Hi,

I have visited your site some time ago when i was looking for a Debian image. It’s a small world :-) Stick computers will probably be the hardware for the FreedomBox. The only thing we are all waiting for is good support for the kernel developers. Hopefully some brave (and clever, think about the Raspberry Pi success) manufacturers will provide it in the future…

Was surprised to find your article, it’s almost exactly in the same spirit with what I wrote some time ago on my page advocating the use of MK802 as a small home server: http://romanrm.ru/en/a10/mk802-server

Most software that we want on the FreedomBox is already easy to use. Installing, configuring and maintaining are the tasks that are difficult for a non-geek.

Take for example this WordPress blog, to get it running required me to install and configure Apache, MySQL, PHP etc, etc. – tasks that are way beyond the skills of the targetted users. Once a WordPress blog is up and running, using it as an author is simple.

One of the main tasks for the FreedomBox community is making the installation, configuration and maintenance of the programs as simple as possible. This should be quite do-able i think.

the freedombox seems to target end-users (and not so much real hackers or Linux gurus – they can tweak their own distro to their needs).

So if my mum would be concerned about her privacy, what skills will my mum need as an end user if she wants to use this freedombox?

Thanks,
Jos

Comment on Building an energy efficient server by robvanderhoeven http://freedomboxblog.nl/building-an-energy-efficient-server/#comment-5876 robvanderhoeven Thu, 01 Nov 2012 09:33:08 +0000 http://freedomboxblog.nl/?p=286#comment-5876 I have looked at pico PSU’s but have my doubts about them. Most people think small = efficient. This is not always the case as these measurements from silentpcreview.com show:

picoPSU from Mini-box, 80W brick

They measured an efficiency of 79.4% at 21.5 Watt.

After i wrote the article i came across a very detailed article about the E9 400W power supply that i use in my system. In this article an efficiency of 82.6% was measured at 20W output. The noise they measured was only 14.3 dB(A) which is barely noticible (i cannot detect it, the only noise from my system comes from the hard-disk but this is *very* low). If you are interested, here is a link to the article (in German):

Be Quiet E9 400W power supply measurements

The internal power supply i use has some big advantages when compared to picoPSU’s:

- No brick outside the computer case.
- At least as efficient, but probably more efficient.
- Plenty of power for upgrades like graphic cards
- Less expensive (if you want the same quality)
- The Be Quiet is very well built, comes with a 5 year warranty!

Most gold certified 400Watt would only be good att a range between around 150-300 Watt usage. If u use below 100Watt in your case it can go low as 75%. Price tag is more expensive and you have another fan making noise.

Comment on Introducing the MK802 FreedomStick. by robvanderhoeven http://freedomboxblog.nl/introducing-the-mk802-freedomstick/#comment-5825 robvanderhoeven Wed, 31 Oct 2012 12:15:44 +0000 http://freedomboxblog.nl/?p=344#comment-5825 Wow, that’s an excellent WiFi performance! What version of the MK802 are you using?
It’s always fun to try a Gigabit adapter but don’t expect too much. My Marvell ARM system tops at 20 MB/s for a Samba share and this system does not have USB bottlenecks (USB Harddisk and USB Ethernet).

Just to tell you know, I built my own NAS with a MK-802 + 500GB USB drive:

-Lubuntu 12.04 from Rikomagic
-Webmin
-Ajaxplorer
-Samba
-Netatalk
-Apache/PHP5/MySQL

All done with tutorials for Ubuntu, works like a charm as a time machine backup!

NAS perf is arround 7-8MB/s throught MK802=> WIFI => Router =>WIFI => Mac
I should try with a gigabyte adapter between the MK and the router!
